Invasion of the fleas!

Published: 30/05/2017

Experts are warning of an invasion of billions of fleas into UK homes as summer approaches. The warm winter this year has created ideal conditions for swarms of fleas in UK houses, with one newspaper describing it as a potential 'flea epidemic'! The warmer conditions in the winter enable these pests to have a more prolonged period to lay and hatch their eggs in your home.

One expert, Dr Tim Nuttall, a veterinary dermatologist at the University of Liverpool, has warned that the number of fleas in Britain has been steadily rising over recent years but there has been a marked increase since 2013. This summer the invasion of the fleas is set to reach even higher levels!

The life-cycle of fleas

There are four stages in the life-cycle of a flea: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. After feeding on blood, either human or animal, the adult female lays her eggs and can produce up to 40 a day. These eggs fall off the skin as your pet moves and will distribute the eggs throughout the home. At the stage when adult fleas emerge, according to Pet MD, they will do so when the presence of a host is 'made obvious'. This is done through their sensing of environmental factors such as body heat and carbon dioxide levels, which tell the flea that a host – either a pet or a human – is nearby and ready to feed from.

Within hours of emerging, adult fleas need to feed and then will breed and begin laying eggs within days, which repeats the life-cycle.

Preventative measures you can take

There are several preventative measures that you can take to try and prevent full-blown infestations in your home, however it is important to note that fleas can affect any home or business so it is not a mark of uncleanliness to be effected by these unpleasant pests.. The main approach should be regular and throughout cleaning and vacuuming the home and any areas where your pets goes. And remember to seal and dispose of the vacuum bag!

However, sometimes preventative measures fail, particularly with tenacious and persistent infestations. Top Dog's expert technician Dean recently attended a home that, for example, had very deep floorboards, which provided an ideal hiding space for the pests. In such cases, expert knowledge is required to eradicate the problem.

When preventative measures that you can take at home fail, it's time to call in the experts!
