Bedbugs are commonly associated with dirt, but this isn’t actually true: bedbug control is not related to cleanliness at all. Dean, our expert pest control technician, stresses that bedbugs in fact travel extensively, often on suitcases and clothing, to wherever they can find a person or animal to feed on. Feeding then normally happens at night when the person is asleep, as the bedbugs are attracted to the carbon dioxide that we exhale.
This is partially why London bedbug control can be such a problem in hotels, hostels, and shelters with a high turnover of people on the move, although it can also affect people returning from holidays who unwittingly carry the bedbugs home with them.
How to Identify Bed Bugs
Based on his knowledge of these unpleasant pests Dean stresses that there are a few key ways to identify bedbugs to prevent them becoming a problem for you.
A common misconception is that bedbugs are invisible to the naked eye, but this is in fact incorrect as they are approximately the size of a small lentil and are even bigger once they have swollen following a feeding.
Another tell-tale sign is bloodstains on bedsheets, which are left after the bugs feed on the person, and usually look like dark red dried ink. However, if you are travelling to a hotel or hostel the sheets will almost certainly have been changed before you arrive, so Dean advises people to also be aware that bedbug eggs can look like specks of white cotton and are usually found on the bedhead or in crevices around the bed.
Being able to identify signs of bedbugs is crucial as one of the main means of transmission of bedbugs is when people unwittingly carry them from place to place on their suitcases or clothes.
However, once people have transported bedbugs into an area, eradication becomes an urgent matter. Bedbug infestations can affect all kinds of properties from hotels to shelters, hostels to private residences. Nowhere is immune and rapid and effective treatment is required to halt their spread as quickly as possible before the bedbugs can infest more areas or be carried to further locations.
Dean was recently called to attend to a shelter in the London area to provide a comprehensive bedbug eradication treatment. This is part of the ongoing package that the shelter has from Top Dog Pest Control to stay in control of bedbug problems. Every few months, the Top Dog expert technicians undertake a full spray of the entire dormitory area to exterminate any and all bedbugs to ensure the health and comfort of residents and to halt the spread and transit of the bugs.
This kind of comprehensive bedbug eradication treatment is part of the service that Top Dog Pest Control can provide to local London businesses, residents, and charities.
