The summer season is here, your bags are packed and you’re leaving your busy London life behind and jetting off for some R&R in the sun… first things first on arrival; check your hotel room for bed bugs!

But my hotel is 5* and cost a fortune, I hear you say…

5* luxury or a backpackers hostel, bed bugs can be found anywhere given that they feed off blood, not dirt.

How to Check you Hotel Room for Bed Bugs

The majority of people wouldn’t think to check their hotel rooms on arrival, or know how to. It’s hard to imagine that bed bugs could be lurking in those crisp white Egyptian cotton sheets. However, appearances can be deceiving as many a holidaymaker will tell you.

So how do you check that you aren’t going to become a midnight feast for hungry bed bugs?

First, if at all possible, leave your luggage outside the room. If you can’t, leave it right behind the door. All you need is one bed bug to hop onto your suitcase and you could be taking unwanted guests home to London with you. Then, inspect the bed and surrounding space, checking the following areas:

  • On top of and underneath the duvet.
  • The mattress. Bed bugs love to hide in the seams around the edge, so make sure to pull these back and check thoroughly.
  • Inside and outside of pillow cases.
  • The bed base underneath the mattress.
  • Behind the headboard.
  • Along the skirting boards.
  • Behind pictures situated behind the bed.

You are looking for small oval shaped insects of a brown or black colour, or small black dots of bed bug faeces that look specs of biro ink.

It may seem like a lot of bother when all you want to do is go and lie by the pool with a cocktail in hand, but rest assured that these 5 minutes could save you a world of trouble. Having bed bugs in your hotel room not only means that you may spend your holiday itching very irritating bites, but also that you could transfer them back to your home, incurring cost and causing disruption when an infestation breaks out and you need to call in a London pest control company.
