Pest control has been called out to the first discovery of mosquito eggs capable of carrying the dangerous Zika virus.
Motorway Services Mosquitos
The potentially Zika infected mosquito eggs were found at a motorway service station located on the M20, near Stanford in Kent. This points to the strong possibility that they had been brought into the country on lorries travelling from other countries.
Shepway District Council immediately called in pest control to eradicate the eggs, along with the threat they pose to the UK.
This was then followed by letters being sent to fifteen neighbouring households, informing them that Asian Tiger mosquito eggs had been discovered a short distance from their homes, and that pest control technicians would be visiting their properties to treat outside spaces.
Pest controllers sprayed insecticide in water butts and all areas collecting water, as this is where mosquito eggs thrive. The targeted product creates a film of oil that then suffocates the eggs.
One resident, Samantha Cox, told reports that it was concerning at first but that in the end the treatment was very simple, quick and low-key.
What is the Zika Virus?
The Zika virus is carried by the Asian Tiger mosquito, which is native to south east Asia. There have been many reports recently of it being introduced to many other areas through the transport of goods, including south and central America and the Caribbean.
Pregnant women are most at risk from the Zika virus, as it has been linked to severe birth defects in babies, including reduced head size and underdeveloped brains.
Despite the outbreak of the Zika virus being declared a national emergency, Public Health England has reassured the public that there is no further evidence infected insects being present in the UK, and that there was currently no risk to public health.
Head of medical entomology at Public Health England, Jolyon Medlock, also stated that regular monitoring of new mosquito species entering that UK is carried out as routine, and that enhanced monitoring had been undertaken of the area surrounding the site where the possibly infected eggs were found.
Deter Mosquitoes around your London Property
Zika infected or not, mosquitoes are a nuisance to have in or around your London property and can cause some people a lot of discomfort throughout the summer months. Feeding off blood, mosquitoes bite humans, which can lead to extremely itchy spots on the skin. For those that react badly, these can grow to sizeable blemishes and even infections that require antibiotics.
Top Dog Pest Control issues advice on keeping mosquitoes at bay around your London property:
- Avoid having stagnant water in your garden, as this is where mosquitoes lay their eggs.
- Light attracts mosquitoes, so keep doors and windows shut after dark, where possible.
- Burn citronella when sitting outside in the evening as this repels mosquitoes.
Wear mosquito repellent if you know you are sensitive to their bites, as well as long-sleeved clothing.
